Office chair, task chair, operator chair: what’s the difference?
You’ve probably immediately noticed that we’re using three different terms to describe the chairs on this page.
So, what’s the difference between office, task and operator chairs?
There isn’t one! These terms are used interchangeably.
The terms are used to describe highly-adjustable chairs that are ideal for working seated at a desk.
Why is ergonomics important for office chairs?
In all likelihood, the people using your office, task or operator chairs are going to be sitting in them for long periods of time (e.g. several hours throughout a working day).
In which case, you’ll want to ensure that your chosen task chairs embody ergonomic design principles.
Ergonomic task chairs not only make sitting for long periods more comfortable, but can prevent discomfort and pain (which in turn can result in injuries), improve productivity, and support the long-term health of your employees.
What features should I look for in an office, task or operator chair?
Due to the sheer amount of options and choices available, deciding which office chair is right for you can be a challenge.
However, at the very least, you should look for the following features (especially on higher-end, more expensive task chairs): adjustable seat height, lumbar support, armrests, seat depth adjustment, tilt/recline function, swivel base and castor wheels, seat back (e.g. upholstered, mesh, perforated), arms (fixed, adjustable etc) and breathable upholstery.
Tick those features off, and you’re going to end up with an operator chair that offers years of valuable, reliable service.
How long do office chairs last?
If you’re buying well-designed and manufactured, contract-quality office chairs, then you can expect your office chairs to last a minimum of five years (although some premium task chairs can be expected to last even longer – likewise, many budget chairs will only have a warranty of between 1-2 years).
Many task chairs come with multi-year warranties – you can find this information within the product description.
